"The zoo's first project is a zip line that will take guests over the waterways and treetops to a height of 150 feet, returning them to ground level at nearly 30 mph," the news release read.Īlthough the cost of installation for this attraction has more than doubled since the concept was first approved over a year ago, it will more than pay for itself after two years in operation, according to the news release. In October 2022, a $30 million master plan was adopted that will revitalize the park, add new exhibits and visitor amenities, as well as provide larger, more naturalistic exhibits for lions, mandrills, gorillas, and many other animals, according to zoo officials. With the Lone Star discount, up to four people per card holder can benefit from lower prices at the gate. Lone Star cardholders will be offered discounted admission prices on Wednesdays of each week and on select Sundays each month, the GPZ said in a news release. Prior to the March 10 entrance fee increase, adult tickets were $16, senior prices $14 and $10 for children. The price of zoo visits will range from $14 to $19 for adults, senior prices will range from $12 to $17 and prices for children will range from $8 to $13. Officials said the increase is also necessary to help maintain the zoo's operation.

Because the zoo isn't very big, it's probably not something you'll want to travel far for, but if you're nearby I say it's worth the visit. The zoo will utilize the "dynamic pricing model" that is used nationwide to increase zoo visits on days when there are less visitors, Gladys Porter Zoo said in news release. Phillips donated the vehicles on September 28, 1993 in a cere- mony at the Gladys Porter Zoo in A Kemp's Ridley sea turtle with a radio transmitter at. But nothing was too outdated, the exhibits are still suitable for the animals. The zoo hasn't changed too much from my childhood, they even still have a lot of the old signage. And the resaca attracts quite a bit of native wildlife, so you can see some of the birds that make the Rio Grande Valley such a big birding hotspot. The aquarium isn't very big, opting to focus specifically on the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre rather than trying to feature species from all over the world.Īnother thing that's really cool about the zoo is that part of it is built over a resaca, so you can get around on bridges, and some exhibits are built on small islands you can view from the bridges.

There are some very nice bird exhibits as well, including the aviary Macaw Canyon. ADMISSION Adults: 16.00 Children (2-13) 10.00 Children under 2 free Seniors (over 65): 14.00 The Zoo is open every day from 9:00 a.m. (I won't be surprised if they add it to all the open croc exhibits, there are still a ton of coins in the herpetarium one) There's a nice little hoofstock collection, including the harnessed bushbuck, rare in zoos outside of Africa. When I was a kid it was just the shorter wooden rail, I think they just got tired of people throwing coins at the crocs. They added some tall fencing to some of the outdoor crocodile exhibits. Author of Gladys Porter Zoo Album ( 1973 ), Los Angeles Zoo Album ( 1984 ).

The crocodilian collection is quite good, with them having saltwater crocodiles, Orinoco crocodiles, the aforementioned Philippine crocodile (a rare species in zoos and in the wild), Cuban crocodiles, and more. Contributor to IVY Zoo Workshop ( 1996 ) and AG Tiergartenbiologie Workshop.

Gladys Porter is not a very big zoo, but it does have some species that you won't find in many other zoos. The heat wore me out quicker than expected (I intentionally wore my steel toe boots to get a workout and wear myself out faster, but it worked too well!) so I didn't spend as much time as I planned, but I got a decent amount of photos. I really wanted to go to the zoo earlier in the year to avoid the extreme heat, but some stuff came up so my scheduling didn't work out. I wasn't able to get good pictures of the Philippine crocodile or the pygmy hippos. Jerry Stones, the facilities director for the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, the birthplace of Harambe, told ABC News that he was there for Harambes birth and raised him like a child. I wasn't able to take a lot of good exhibit photos with my big camera so I took some with my phone camera, I'll have to upload them later. I added a bunch of new photos to the Gladys Porter Zoo gallery! Mostly animal photos and some signage.
